Maroons Defeat Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Senior Korry Schwanz (Menominee, Mich./ Menominee) led all scorers with 17 points as the 22nd-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team defeated University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon University 65-56 Sunday at Skibo Gymnasium.

The first half featured 12 lead changes and five ties before Chicago (18-6 overall, 7-6 UAA) took the lead for good, 30-28, on a jumper by freshman Jill DiNucci (Glenshaw, Pa./ Shaler Area) with 4:05 left in the period.

DiNucci scored 10 points off the bench for her third straight double-digit performance. She also matched her career high with eight rebounds.

Schwanz's basket as time expired in the opening stanza gave the Maroons a 36-29 halftime lead. Her 17 points equaled her season high and marked her fourth consecutive game scoring in double figures.

Carnegie Mellon closed to within three points, 42-39, on Leah Feola's basket with 14:26 remaining in the contest. Schwanz then tallied seven of the game's next 11 points as the Maroons increased their lead to 51-41 at the 9:24 mark.

A layup by freshman Anna Woods (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./ Lower Merion) with 3:58 remaining gave Chicago its largest lead of the afternoon, 60-49.

Freshman Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) finished with 11 points for the Maroons, while junior Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) added 10.

Stacie Aleski paced the Tartans (8-16, 2-11) with 14 points. Ashley Maziotta and Feola finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Led by junior Nicaya Rapier's (Munster, Ind./ Bishop Noll) 12 rebounds, the Maroons dominated the glass as they outrebounded Carnegie Mellon by a 55-27 margin. Chicago grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, including six by Hackney.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak.
