Maroons Open Season at Northwestern Duals
EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Chicago wrestling team opened its 2006-07 campaign on Sunday with a 1-2 mark at the Northwestern University Duals.
Chicago began the day with a 20-15 loss to 16th-ranked NCAA Division III rival Cornell (Iowa) College (1-0).
Senior 165-pounder Phil Kruzel (Elmhurst, Ill./ Fenwick), senior 197-pounder Drew Marriott (Excelsior Springs, Mo./ Excelsior Springs), sophomore 184-pounder Justin Lucas (Medford, N.J./ Shawnee), sophomore heavyweight Tom Nero (Carlisle, Ind./ Sullivan), and freshman 149-pounder L.T. Switzer (Omaha, Neb./ Creighton Prep) notched victories as Chicago won five of the nine contested bouts.
In addition to a forfeit loss at 141 pounds, the Maroons dropped a one-point decision at 133 pounds and a two-point decision at 174. Cornell 125-pounder Chris Heilman, currently ranked third in the NCAA Division III, posted a 10-0 major decision.
In Sunday's second dual, the Maroons fell 34-12 to host Northwestern (2-0), the sixth-ranked team in the NCAA Division I.
Switzer earned Chicago's lone victory in contested matches as he pinned the Wildcats' Marty Gould in a 149-pound bout. The Maroons lost a one-point decision at 165 pounds and two-point decisions at 157 and 174.
Chicago (1-2) concluded the afternoon with a 21-12 win over NAIA rival Cumberland University (1-4).
The Maroons took five of the nine contested bouts, including wins by fall by sophomore Ben Hart (Wood Dale, Ill./ Fenton) at 133 pounds and freshman Troy Carlson (Cary, Ill./ Cary Grove) at 157.
Kruzel (165), Lucas (184), and senior 174-pounder Mike Bishof (Oak Brook, Ill./ York) each won their respective bouts. Two of the Maroons' four losses were one-point decisions.
