Chicago Falls at Washington 1-0
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Washington (Mo.) University's Sara Schroeder scored midway through the first half as the sixth-ranked Bears edged the University of Chicago women's soccer team 1-0 in University Athletic Association play Saturday at Francis Field.
Schroeder headed in a cross from Marin McCarthy at the 20:47 mark as the UAA champion Bears (16-2-0 overall, 7-0-0 UAA) won their 14th consecutive contest.
Chicago (12-5-1, 4-3-0) had a scoring opportunity in the 12th minute when junior midfielder Amanda Catalano's (Whitinsville, Mass./ Northbridge) free kick from 50 yards away hit the cross bar.
Washington netminder Carrie Sear stopped another long free kick from Catalano in the 26th minute.
Chicago and Washington -- who closed out their respective regular seasons -- each collected three shots apiece in the first half, while the Maroons notched a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Maroons had the best scoring opportunity of the second half on junior forward Christine Farmer's (Pine City, N.Y./ Elmira Notre Dame) breakaway in the 72nd minute. Her shot from 10 yards out sailed over the net.
Chicago outshot the Bears 6-3 in the second stanza with a 4-0 advantage in corners.
Sear made a career-high six saves, while junior goalkeeper Amanda Sutter (Irvine, Calif./ University) stopped one shot for Chicago.
