Maroons Win Four of Six in Arizona
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The University of Chicago baseball team posted a 4-2 mark on its season-opening spring break tour at the Greater Phoenix Invitational. Senior Nathan Ginsberg (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) posted a complete-game victory and shared the team lead with 12 total bases during the week.
Chicago 20, Thomas 5 (Mar. 30)
Junior Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while senior Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park River Forest), junior Travis Blane (Valparaiso, Ind./ Valparaiso), and freshman Kevin Holzbog (Denison, Texas/ Denison) each collected a pair of RBIs.
Chicago 6, Thomas 1 (Mar. 29)
Senior Nate Ginsberg (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) threw a complete game, giving up only two hits and no earned runs while striking out 10. Blane went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and his third double in as many games. Junior Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a and run scored. The Maroons plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 deadlock.
Colby 4, Chicago 2 (Mar. 28 - Game 2)
Colby tied the game in the top of the seventh inning and scored three times in the top of the ninth to gain the doubleheader split. Freshman Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) pitched 8.1 innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out seven and walking three. Meyer went 2-for-3 including a two-out RBI in the bottom of the sixth for the game's first run. Ginsberg belted a solo home run in the ninth.
Chicago 6, Colby 5 (Mar. 28 - Game 1)
Freshman Dan McConologue (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) allowed four hits and fanned nine over 6.2 innings, but was plagued by five unearned runs -- four of them in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sophomore Rob Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) retired the game's final batter. Blane was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore Ben Nordstrom

Southern Maine 2, Chicago 0 (Mar. 27)
Sophomore Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) pitched eight strong innings, but yielded a pair of solo home runs in the sixth. He fanned five while walking three in a losing effort. Senior Mike Serio (Antioch, Ill./ Carmel) collected two of the Maroons' four hits.
Chicago 9, Oberlin 7 (Mar. 26)
Sophomore Rob Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) delivered a two-out bases-loaded double in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 7-7 tie. Meyer was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Sophomore Alex Garbier (Watertown, Mass./ Watertown) pitched the final 1.2 innings for the win. He walked three and struck out two without allowing a hit. He also pitched his way out of a bases-loaded situation.
