Maroons Drop Slugfest at Aurora
AURORA, Ill. -- Host Aurora University scored three runs in the seventh inning and added three more in the eighth en route to a come-from-behind 14-13 win over the University of Chicago baseball team Friday afternoon.
A grand slam by junior catcher Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge) -- his second homer of the year and second in as many games -- in the top of the seventh gave Chicago a 13-8 lead, but the Spartans (25-15) plated six runs over the next two frames.
David Warner's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference.
Chicago (8-14) scored five times in the top of the third inning to take a 5-3 lead after three complete frames. Senior pitcher Nathan Ginsberg (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) capped the outburst with a two-run home run, his second of the season.
The game was tied 6-6 after four innings before the Maroons regained the lead 9-8 after six.
Sophomore shortstop Rob Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) extended his hitting streak to 12 games as he went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Senior second baseman Jordan Onulak (Edison, N.J./ John Stevens) and junior first baseman Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) each collected an RBI for Chicago.
Ginsberg took the loss in relief of sophomore starter Alex Garbier (Watertown, Mass./ Watertown). Ginsberg (2-3), who started in right field, allowed six runs -- three earned -- over the final two innings. Garbier allowed eight runs in the first six frames.
Matt Meyer (1-0), Aurora's third hurler on the day, logged 1.2 innings to notch the win before Chris Koudelka pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fifth save of the season
