Maroons Split at Benedictine
LISLE, Ill. -- The University of Chicago baseball team split a twinbill Wednesday at Benedictine University, taking game one 4-3 before falling 6-3 in the second game.
In game one, Chicago trailed 1-0 after five innings before scoring three times in the top of the sixth.
Freshman center fielder Kevin Holzbog's (Denison, Texas/ Denison) run-scoring single gave the Maroons a 2-1 lead before a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore catcher Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) made it 3-1.
Sophomore pitcher Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) went the distance, allowing seven hits and three runs over seven innings. He walked one while fanning three as he evened his record at 1-1.
Kip Simmerman (0-1), who gave up three runs -- one earned -- in five innings of work -- took the loss for the Eagles.
In the nightcap, Benedictine (13-10) scored five runs in the first four innings off junior starter Alex Gallan (Downers Grove, Ill./ South), who fell to 1-1 on the season.
Senior third baseman Mike Serio (Antioch, Ill./ Carmel) delivered a two-run single as the Maroons (5-6) plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Eagles' reliever Dan Vincenti retired the game's final two batters to notch his fourth save of the year.
John Ready (2-1) pitched 4.1 scoreless innings to record the win.
