Maroons Fall at Concordia
RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Concordia University Chicago scored 15 runs in the final four innings en route to a 17-7 win over the University of Chicago baseball team Wednesday afternoon.
A three-run home run off the bat of senior first baseman Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park River Forest) in the third inning and a three-run blast by junior designated hitter Travis Blane (Valparaiso, Ind./ Valparaiso) in the fifth gave the Maroons (4-3) a 7-2 lead.
Phil Seris's two-run homer in the seventh put Concordia (15-3) on top 8-7. The Cougars added six runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth -- on a Seris three-run home run.
Sophomore starting pitcher Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) allowed six runs on nine hits over six innings for the Maroons. He fanned four while walking three. The first of three Chicago relievers, sophomore Alex Garbier (Watertown, Mass./ Watertown) took the loss (0-1).
Sophomore shortstop Rob Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) hit a solo homer for the Maroons in the second inning.
Seris finished the game with seven RBIs for Concordia. Three Concordia relievers held the Maroons scoreless for the final four frames. Tommy Meyers earned the victory (3-0).
