Maroons Drop Two to #19 DePauw

CHICAGO -- Making its final 2008 appearance at J. Kyle Anderson Field, the University of Chicago baseball team lost both halves of a doubleheader to 19th-ranked DePauw University Saturday afternoon. The Tigers came from behind in both games, winning the opener 7-2 before taking game two 7-4.

Senior right fielder Nathan Ginsberg's (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) run-scoring double in the bottom of the third inning of Saturday's first game gave the Maroons a 2-1 lead. Chicago scored its first run in the opening inning on an RBI single off the bat of junior left fielder Travis Blane (Valparaiso, Ind./ Valparaiso).

Mike Stout's three-run homer capped a four-run DePauw outburst in the top of the fifth inning. The Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh en route to a 7-2 victory in game one.

Jeremy Alland (5-2) allowed five hits and one earned run in 5.1 innings to record the win.

Junior hurler Alex Gallan (Downers Grove, Ill./ South) went the distance for the Maroons. Gallan (1-4) yielded 11 hits and one walk while striking out five. Three of DePauw's seven runs were unearned.

Senior third baseman Mike Serio (Antioch, Ill./ Carmel) scored both Chicago runs.

Eric Reese's two-run blast snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted the Tigers (35-11) to the victory in Saturday's nightcap.

Chicago (8-16) took a 3-0 lead as freshman left fielder Zach Osman (Long Beach, Ind./ Marquette), freshman shortstop Nick Fazzari (Wheaton, Ill./ Glenbard South), and freshman center fielder Kevin Holzbog (Denison, Texas/ Denison) drove in runs in the bottom of the second.

DePauw evened the score at 3-3 when Stout clubbed his second home run of the day, a two-run shot in the top of the fifth.

Reliever Aaron Meyers (7-2) tossed a pair of scoreless innings to notch the victory.

Freshman pitcher Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) posted his first career complete game in a losing effort for the Maroons. He was tagged for 10 hits and seven runs (six earned), to go along with five walks and four strikeouts.
