Maroons Defeat North Central
CHICAGO -- Sophomore pitcher Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) earned a complete game victory as the University of Chicago baseball team defeated North Central College 4-3 Wednesday at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
Pankow (2-1) did not allow an earned run en route to his third complete game in four starts. He allowed seven hits without issuing a walk.
Trailing 2-0 after three innings, Chicago (6-6) scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Junior catcher Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) and senior designated hitter Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park River Forest) hit back-to-back RBI base hits to tie the game at 2-2.
Hofer then scored the go-ahead run on junior first baseman's Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) sacrifice fly. Senior right fielder Nate Ginsberg (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) capped the inning with a two-out run-scoring single.
North Central (6-14) scored once in the top of the ninth, but Pankow retired the game's final batter with the tying run at first base.
Senior third baseman Mike Serio (Antioch, Ill./ Carmel) collected a pair of hits on the day, giving him 100 for his career.
Erik Hudson (0-3) took the loss for the Cardinals, as he was touched for nine hits and four runs over 4.2 innings. Center fielder Justin Moriarty was 2-for-4 with an RBI in a losing effort.
