Maroons Split Against Regional Contenders

LOVES PARK, Ill. -- The University of Chicago baseball team split a pair of games against two of the top teams in the Central Region Sunday at Rockford College, as the Maroons defeated the host Regents 8-5 before falling to fifth-ranked Carthage College 11-9.

Chicago scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning en route to the win over Rockford (23-16), which entered the contest ranked fifth in the Central Region. Freshman left fielder Zach Osman (Long Beach, Ind./ Marquette) capped the Maroons' outburst with a two-out, two-run double.

Senior center fielder Mike Morgan (Chicago, Ill./ Northridge Prep) delivered a run-scoring single -- his second RBI of the game -- as the Maroons plated a pair of runs in the fifth.

Sophomore pitcher Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) raised his record to 4-2 as he allowed nine hits and five runs over seven innings of work. Freshman Dan McConologue (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) held Rockford scoreless over the final two innings to notch his second save of the season.

Brian Durlak (2-5) took the loss for Rockford. He was tagged for six runs in four innings.

In Sunday's second game, Carthage's David Hermes belted a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 9-9 tie and lift the Red Men -- currently ranked second in the Central Region and fifth in the NCAA Division III -- to the 11-9 victory.

Carthage (32-4) led 9-6 after four innings, but the Maroons (9-17) scored twice in the fifth and once in the seventh to tie the score.

Junior left fielder Travis Blane (Valparaiso, Ind./ Valparaiso) clubbed a two-run home run -- his second of the season -- in the top of the second. He then drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the third, giving him three RBIs for the game.

McConologue (1-4) took the loss after coming on in relief of senior starter Nathan Ginsberg (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) to start the eighth inning. Ginsberg yielded 10 hits and nine runs over seven innings.

Carthage's fourth hurler of the game, Mike Maher (5-1) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to record the win.
