Maroons Drop Two at Case
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The University of Chicago baseball team lost two games Saturday at Case Western Reserve University's Nobby's Ballpark, falling 7-1 to Washington (Mo.) University before dropping a 5-4 decision to the host Spartans.
In the first game, Washington hurler Brian Williams tossed a complete game five-hitter in the Bears' (12-10) 7-1 win.
Sophomore right-hander Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) allowed Washington just two runs and five hits through the first six innings, but was tagged for four runs and three hits in the bottom of the seventh. Pankow slipped to 2-2 on the season.
Freshman left fielder Zach Osman (Long Beach, Ind./ Marquette) provided the Maroons' lone RBI with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.
In the second game, Case's Kevin Train broke a 4-4 tie with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Spartans (11-26-1) edged Chicago (6-11) 5-4.
The Maroons trailed 4-2 after five frames before junior catcher Thomas Gonzalez (Newton, Mass./ North) and senior center fielder Mike Morgan (Chicago, Ill./ Northbridge Prep) knocked in runs in the top of the sixth to even the score at 4-4.
Case's Kevin Haley (4-3) and Chicago freshman Dan McConologue (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) (1-3) both threw complete games. Case outhit the Maroons 10-8.
