Chicago Splits Two at Case
CLEVELAND -- The University of Chicago baseball team split two games Sunday at Case Western Reserve University's Nobby's Ballpark as it defeated the host Spartans 5-2 in the opener and fell 8-2 to Washington (Mo.) University in the second game.
Chicago scored four runs in the top of third inning en route to its 5-2 win over Case (11-28-1). Sophomore third baseman Ben Nordstrom (Scotts Valley, Calif./ Santa Cruz) capped the frame with a two-run double.
Junior first baseman Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) and freshman center fielder Kevin Holzbog (Denison, Texas/ Denison) each collected three hits in the contest.
Senior southpaw Nathan Ginsberg (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) evened his record at 2-2 after limiting the Spartans to five hits and two runs over seven innings. Freshman right-hander Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) tossed the final two innings to record his first career save.
In the second game, Washington pitcher Andy Webb scattered five hits and struck out eight as the Bears (14-10) defeated Chicago (7-12) 8-2.
Senior designated hitter Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park-River Forest) and Nordstrom singled and scored in the fourth and eighth innings, respectively.
