Carnegie Mellon Downs Chicago 21-0
CHICAGO -- Carnegie Mellon University's Robert Gimson and Travis Sivek combined for 223 yards and three touchdowns as the Tartans defeated the University of Chicago 21-0 in University Athletic Association football action Saturday at Stagg Field.
Gimson rushed for 113 yards on 17 carries, while Sivek gained 110 yards on 29 attempts. Carnegie Mellon (3-4 overall, 1-1 UAA), which did not complete a pass in four attempts, rolled up 279 yards on 66 carries.
Carnegie Mellon scored the only points of the first half when Gimson's 4-yard run on the third play of the second quarter capped an 11-play, 64-yard drive.
On its first possession of the second half, Chicago (3-3, 0-2) moved 57 yards on seven plays to reach the CMU 19-yard line.
On the Maroons' next play, Steve McGovern intercepted a pass and returned it 54 yards with an additional 15 yards tacked on as a result of a personal foul to give CMU the ball at the Chicago 21-yard line. Five plays later, Sivek plowed in from the 1-yard line to put the Tartans on top 14-0.
Chicago's next drive also resulted in an interception, this time from Jon Bodnar, whose 3-yard runback put the ball at the Carnegie Mellon 40-yard line.
Sivek and Gimson then handled 10 of the Tartans' 11 plays on their final scoring drive, capped by a Sivek 4-yard run on the final play of the third period.
Chicago mounted a scoring threat on its final possession as it advanced 66 yards on 11 plays to the CMU 14-yard line before Chris Bridgman intercepted a pass at the 5-yard line with 1:48 left in the contest.
Junior quarterback John Kiernan (Joliet, Ill./ Catholic), making his first start since week two, completed 14 of 21 attempts for 128 yards, but was intercepted on two occasions. Freshman Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) entered the game midway through the fourth quarter and was 5-of-13 for 57 yards with two picks.
Freshman wideout Clay Wolff (St. Louis, Mo./ Christian Brothers) caught eight passes for 98 yards, while sophomore tight end Michael Emerson (Okemos, Mich./ Okemos) had five receptions for 60 yards.
