Maroons Run Past Eureka 51-6

CHICAGO -- Four Maroons rushed for more than 100 yards as the University of Chicago football team routed Eureka College 51-6 in the season finale for both teams Saturday at Stagg Field.

Freshman tailback Thomas Parks (Crown Point, Ind./ Crown Point) led the onslaught with 152 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

Freshman tailback Joe Steelman (Rolla, Mo./ Rolla), senior tailback Mike Serio (Antioch, Ill./ Carmel), and junior quarterback John Kiernan (Joliet, Ill./ Catholic) gained 107, 105, and 103 yards, respectively. All three scored a touchdown.

Chicago (4-5) led 10-0 after one quarter on a 24-yard field goal from sophomore Ryan Verissimo (Skokie, Ill./ Niles West) and a Steelman 41-yard touchdown run.

Eureka (2-8) scored its only points of the afternoon when Chris Wakid rushed in from 1 yard out early in the second period. Chicago answered on Parks's first touchdown, a 5-yard run with 1:50 left in the half.

Chicago exploded for 28 points in the third quarter. Parks scored on a 50-yard run -- the longest by a Maroon in 2007 -- on the third play of the third stanza, before Kiernan scored from 45 yards out on Chicago's next drive.

Kiernan and senior wideout Mike Albian (Darien, Ill./ Montini) then connected on a pair of touchdown completions, the first from 22 yards out at the 7:18 mark of the third quarter and the second from 53 yards away with 2:08 left in the period.

Albian finished the day with 90 yards on three receptions. His two touchdown catches gave him 15 for his career, matching the second-highest total of Chicago's modern football era (since 1969).

Chicago capped the scoring on Serio's 12-yard run with 4:29 remaining in the contest.

En route to winning their eighth consecutive Stagg Field finale under Head Coach Dick Maloney, the Maroons outgained Eureka 576-120. Chicago amassed 467 yards on the ground, losing only four yards on 55 attempts.

Senior linebackers Tony Insalaco (Mokena, Ill./ Lincoln-Way East) and Gaby Fernandez (Miami, Fla./ Columbus) led Chicago's defensive effort. Insalaco collected 10 tackles, while Fernandez was credited with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
