WAA Celebrates 104th Annual Awards Banquet
CHICAGO -- The Women's Athletic Association at the University of Chicago held its 104th annual awards banquet last night at the International House. Sixteen student-athletes received individual-sport and department-wide awards.
Senior basketball player Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) received the Gertrude Dudley Medal -- which is presented to the outstanding senior athlete for leadership and skill in women's athletics -- and the Patricia R. Kirby Multisport Athlete Award -- which is presented to the senior athlete who has received the most varsity letters.
Mojidi earned four letters in basketball, four in outdoor track & field, and two in indoor track & field. She was a four-time All-UAA selection in basketball and a five-time UAA track & field champion.
Senior softball player Vanessa Pineros (Mukilteo, Wash./ Kamiak) received the Mary Jean Mulvaney Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented to the senior with at least three varsity letters who has compiled the highest junior and senior grade point average.
Edith Ballwebber Awards were presented to senior soccer player Eva DeLaurentiis (Frankfort, Ill./ Lincoln Way East), senior cross country athlete Hannah Moots (Nashville, Tenn./ University School), junior soccer player and swimmer Callie Brown (LaCrosse, Wis./ Aquinas), sophomore basketball player Jamie Stinson (Topeka, Kan./ Shawnee Heights), freshman soccer player Claire Denz (Wheaton, Ill./ North), and freshman swimmer Ellie Elgamal (San Diego, Calif./ Bishop's School). The Edith Ballwebber Awards are issued by the Graduate Women's Athletic Association to a member of each class for their total contribution to the athletic program.
Team most valuable player awards went to Mojidi in basketball, Moots in cross country, sophomore Claire Gill (Los Altos Hills, Calif./ King's School) in soccer, junior Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) in softball, Elgamal in swimming & diving, freshman Chrissy Hu (Palo Alto, Calif./ Palo Alto) in tennis, senior Appie Hirve (Burke, Va./ Jefferson Science & Math) in indoor track & field, sophomore Claire Ray (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) in outdoor track & field, and senior Koryn Kendall (Napa, Calif./ Vintage) in volleyball.
Junior Vindya Dayananda (Kathmandu, Nepal/ Lincoln School) received the Max Davidson Award, which is given to the tennis team member whose dedication to the team and sport has excelled above all others.
Founded in 1904, the Women's Athletic Association is the nation's longest-running collegiate women's athletics support organization.
