Chicago Wins Third Straight
CHICAGO -- Sophomore guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) hit the go-ahead free throw and sunk a key three-pointer late in the contest as the University of Chicago men's basketball team edged Babson College 73-69 in non-conference play at the Ratner Athletics Center.
With the Maroons trailing 65-64 with 2:16 left in the game, Pancratz converted a pair of free throw attempts to put Chicago (6-4) in the lead for good. Pancratz was 6-for-6 from the line on the day en route to a 19-point performance.
The Beavers trailed 44-34 early in the second half before tying the game at 52-52 at the 10:19 mark on a three-pointer from Greg Bush, who paced Babson with 18 points.
A Pancratz three-pointer capped a 9-0 Chicago run, giving the Maroons a 61-52 advantage at the 8:11 mark, but Babson scored the next seven points to cut the Chicago lead to 61-59 with 6:02 remaining.
Brian MacDonald's basket with 2:31 to go gave Babson (3-7) its only lead of the second half, 65-64. MacDonald scored 15 points to go along with five assists.
After Pancratz's third three-pointer of the afternoon gave Chicago a 71-67 edge at the 1:07 mark, MacDonald scored on a layup with 48 seconds left to trim the Maroons' lead to two points.
Junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein), who led all scorers with 20 points, sealed the victory for the Maroons when he made a pair of foul shots with 16 seconds on the clock.
Senior forwards Tim Reynolds (North Canton, Ohio/ Hoover) and Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) helped lift the Maroons to their third straight win. Reynolds, who was perfect on four three-point attempts, finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots. Hainje tallied 10 points and led Chicago with nine boards and nine assists.
Zach Etten and Pat Belniak scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Babson.
The victory assured the Maroons of their third consecutive winning record in non-conference competition.
