Chicago Topples #2 Brandeis
BOSTON -- Led by junior guard Matt Corning's (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) 27 points, the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated the NCAA Division III's second-ranked Brandeis University 79-77 in University Athletic Association action Friday night at Auerbach Arena.
Corning hit a pair of three-pointers, including a four-point play, as Chicago (10-5 overall, 3-1 UAA) went on a 9-0 run to turn a 67-63 deficit into a 72-67 advantage with 3:49 left in the game.
A three-pointer by junior forward Adam Machones (Duluth, Minn./ Marshall) put the Maroons on top 75-69 with 1:22 play.
Brandeis closed to within two points, 79-77, on Andre Roberson's three-point basket with nine seconds showing on the clock. After Chicago missed a pair of free throws with four seconds to go, Brandeis regained possession but was unable to attempt a shot as time expired.
The Judges scored the game's first nine points, but Chicago rallied to trim the gap to 33-32 at the break.
Chicago took its first lead of the second stanza, 37-35, on Corning's three-point basket 1:31 into the period.
The Maroons increased their lead to 51-45 when junior forward Tom Watson (Edina, Minn./ Edina) converted a three-point play at the 12:26 mark.
Brandeis's Joe Coppens then scored 12 straight points on three 3-point field goals and three free throws to give the Judges a 57-51 advantage with 10:28 to play. Coppens finished with 27 points to share game-high scoring honors with Corning.
Chicago outrebounded the Judges 32-24 with 14 of its boards coming on the offensive end.
Senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) pulled down 10 rebounds, half of the them offensive. He also scored 17 points to notch his second double-double in the last three games.
Terrell Hollins and Stephen Hill contributed 18 and 12 points, respectively, for Brandeis.
