Maroons Defeat #6 Brandeis to Set Up UAA Title Game Next Week

CHICAGO – Senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) and junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) combined for 42 points as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated sixth-ranked Brandeis University 74-66 in University Athletic Association play Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

The win coupled with Washington (Mo.) University's 61-52 victory over New York University sets up a battle for the UAA championship between Chicago (17-7 overall, 10-3 UAA) and Washington (19-5, 10-3) in next Saturday's regular season finale at the Ratner Center.

Brandeis (19-5, 9-4) built a 39-36 lead after a first half that featured seven lead changes and four ties.

The Judges maintained the lead or a tie until the 6:13 mark of the second half when a Hainje three-pointer put the Maroons on top 62-60. That lead lasted only 18 seconds, as Joe Coppens's three-point basket gave the Judges a 63-62 advantage with 5:55 left in the contest.

Neither team scored for almost two minutes until Corning hit a jumper at the 3:57 mark to give Chicago the lead for good, 64-63. Another Corning basket with 1:26 to go increased the Maroons' advantage to 69-65.

Terrell Hollins, who contributed 18 points and nine boards before fouling out in the final minute, connected on one of two free throw tries with 1:01 remaining to cut the gap to 69-66, but the Maroons sunk five of six foul shots in the game's final 30 seconds to hang on for their fifth consecutive victory.

Hainje and Corning finished with 24 and 18 points, respectively, while junior forward Adam Machones (Duluth, Minn./ Marshall) and sophomore guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) added 11 and 10.

Stephen Hill paced Brandeis with 21 points.
