Chicago Enjoys Successful UAA Home Debut
CHICAGO -- Junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) led all scorers with 22 points as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated Case Western Reserve University 76-65 in its University Athletic Association home opener Friday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Junior forward Adam Machones's (Duluth, Minn./ Marshall) three-pointer 4:45 into the contest gave Chicago (8-5 overall, 1-1 UAA) a 10-8 lead, and the Maroons would remain ahead the rest of the night.
A three-pointer by Corning and a layup by senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) in the final minute of the opening period gave the Maroons a 33-22 advantage at the intermission.
Case (7-6, 0-2) trimmed the Chicago lead to four points midway through the second stanza when Rob Skuski's layup made the score 51-47 with 9:54 to play.
Chicago then went on an 18-4 run to increase its lead to a commanding 69-51 at the 4:04 mark. Five different Maroons scored during that stretch.
Sophomore point guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) scored 16 points and handed out six assists for the Maroons. He connected on four of seven three-point attempts to extend to 10 his streak of consecutive games with multiple three-pointers.
Hainje finished with 11 points as Chicago won its sixth straight home game and notched its 21st consecutive decision over the Spartans.
Steve Young led Case with 20 points, including five three-point field goals. Brad Sutton and Mason Conrad each added 10 points. Sutton also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
