Maroons Fall at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH -- Five Carnegie Mellon University players scored in double figures as the host Tartans defeated the University of Chicago 74-60 in University Athletic Association men's basketball action Friday night at Skibo Gymnasium.

Chicago (11-6 overall, 4-2 UAA) took its last lead of the game, 35-34, with 2:01 left in the first half on a basket by junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein).

A three-pointer by Greg Gonzalez and a layup by Jack Anderson in the final minute of the opening stanza put Carnegie Mellon (12-5, 2-4) on top 39-35 at the break.

Carnegie Mellon started the second half with a 12-4 run, capped by an Anderson three-pointer, giving the Tartans a 51-39 advantage with 15:08 left in the contest.

A pair of Corning free throws brought the Maroons within nine, 56-47, at the 12:33 mark, but a Gonzalez tip-in on the next possession increased CMU's lead to 58-47. The Tartans would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Gonzalez paced the Tartans with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Ryan Einwag added 13 points.

The UAA's second-leading scorer entering the contest, Corning tallied a game-high 26 points. Sophomore point guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) chipped in 12 as Chicago lost for the first time in five games.

Carnegie Mellon outshot the Maroons from the field 48% to 37% as it defeated Chicago for the fourth time in the past five meetings at Skibo Gymnasium.
