Maroons Defeat Carnegie Mellon
CHICAGO – Junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) led four Maroons in double figures with 25 points as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon University 97-78 Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
The victory moved Chicago (13-7 overall, 6-3 UAA) into a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings, one game off the lead with five games remaining.
Chicago built a 41-36 halftime advantage following a first half that featured nine lead changes and six ties.
Carnegie Mellon (13-7, 3-6) took its largest lead of the day, 31-25, on a layup by Terrance Bouldin-Johnson with 4:35 left in opening half. Chicago then closed out the stanza on a 16-5 run.
The Maroons outscored the visitors 12-4 during the first 3:48 of the second period to take their first double-digit lead of the day, 53-43.
A Jack Anderson three-pointer cut the Chicago lead to 61-57 at the 11:58 mark, but the Maroons answered with an 18-4 run to put the game out of reach, 79-61, with 6:43 to play.
Senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) notched his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Hainje, who increased his career scoring total to 995 points, also handed out five assists.
Sophomore guards John Kinsella (Chicago, Ill./ University High) and Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Pancratz connected on four of six three-point attempts for the Maroons, who were 12 for 26 (46%) from behind the arc.
Chicago shot 55% from the field and 89% (25 for 28) from the foul line.
Four Tartans reached double figures, led by Geoff Kozak's 15 points.
