Maroons Hold Off Concordia Chicago
CHICAGO -- Junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) led four Maroons in double figures with 17 points as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated Concordia University Chicago 78-65 Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Chicago (5-4) led the entire game, but the Cougars mounted a furious second-half rally to keep the game's outcome in doubt until the closing minutes.
Sparked by Corning's 11 first-half points, the Maroons built a 44-23 lead at the intermission.
Concordia Chicago (2-6) opened the second half with a 13-0 run to cut the gap to 44-36 at the 16:16 mark. Justin Gray scored six of his game-high 22 points during that stretch.
A jumper by junior forward Tom Watson (Edina, Minn./ Edina) with 13:02 remaining increased Chicago's lead to 52-40. Concordia answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a Gray layup at the 10:55 mark, to close to within five points, 52-47.
Junior forward Adam Machones (Duluth, Minn./ Marshall) hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give the Maroons a double-digit advantage, 58-47, with 8:46 remaining. Chicago led by at least eight points the rest of the way.
Machones finished with 14 points to go along with a game-high six assists. He and senior forward Tim Reynolds (North Canton, Ohio/ Hoover) -- who tallied 11 points -- each pulled down six boards.
Sophomore guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) scored 14 points and handed out four assists as the Maroons won their second straight game and third in four outings.
Ryan Young contributed 10 points for the Cougars, while James Morgan collected a game-high eight rebounds.
