DePauw Defeats Chicago in Tournament Final
GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Tournament most valuable player Mike Moore scored 19 points and dished out 10 assists to lead host DePauw University to an 81-67 win over the University of Chicago men's basketball team in the title game of the Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge.
Leading by only a point at halftime, 29-28, DePauw (4-0) shot 69.6% from the field in the second period as it outscored the Maroons (2-2) by a 52-39 margin.
Chicago fell behind 18-6 midway through the opening stanza before rallying to take a 28-26 lead on a layup by junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) with 19 seconds left in the half.
Moore sunk a three-pointer -- one of his four on the day -- with two seconds remaining in the period to give the Tigers a 29-28 edge at the break.
DePauw opened up a 61-51 lead on a Tony James jumper with 8:23 left in the contest. The Maroons trimmed the gap to five points, 67-62, on Corning's layup at the 5:43 mark, but DePauw outscored Chicago 14-5 the rest of the way.
Corning, who represented Chicago on the all-tournament team, scored a game-high 26 points. He connected on eight of 12 shots from the field, including a 3-for-4 effort from three-point range, and was seven for eight from the foul line.
Sophomore guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) chipped in a season-high 12 points.
Moore was one of two Tigers to notch double-doubles, as Stephen Schott finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brian Oilar also scored in double figures with 14 points.
