Hainje Nets 1,000th Point as Maroons Defeat Emory
ATLANTA -- Senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) became the 14th player in University of Chicago men's basketball history to reach the 1,000 career point plateau as the Maroons defeated University Athletic Association rival Emory University 87-73 Friday night.
With the victory, Chicago (14-7 overall, 7-3 UAA) remained in a tie for second place in the league standings one game behind Washington (Mo.) University, which rallied to defeat Case Western Reserve University 71-68 Friday in Cleveland.
Hainje, who finished the night with 23 points and 11 rebounds, tallied his 1,000th point on a layup with 7:33 left in the first half. Hainje's 23 points and 11 boards marked his second double-double in as many games and fourth of the season.
Emory (10-11, 3-7) opened up an early 13-7 lead -- its largest lead of the night -- before the Maroons rallied to take a 37-34 edge at the intermission.
A three-pointer by Spiros Ferderigos gave the Eagles their last lead of the game, 39-37, in the first minute of the second period. Hainje answered with a three-point shot at the 17:12 mark to put Chicago on top to stay, 40-39.
The Maroons built a double-digit advantage, 56-45, for the first time on junior guard Matt Corning's (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) three-pointer with 11:42 remaining. Corning, who entered the game as the UAA's leading scorer, finished the night with 18 points.
Chicago led by as many as 17 points, 76-59, with 4:39 to play. Emory got as close as eight points, 78-70, on a Ferderigos layup at the 2:14 mark. Ferderigos collected 22 points and 10 rebounds on the evening.
Sophomore guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) scored 15 points for the Maroons, while sophomore guard John Bonelli (San Francisco, Calif./ St. Ignatius) added 12 points off the bench.
Chicago connected on 15 of 22 three-point attempts, good for a .682 percentage. Bonelli was perfect on four tries, while Corning buried four of five attempts.
Anthony Fernandez led all scorers with 24 points for Emory.
