Maroons Defeat Illinois Wesleyan 85-70
CHICAGO -- Senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) led the Maroons in scoring, rebounding, and assists as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated Illinois Wesleyan University 85-70 Saturday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Hainje connected on nine of 12 attempts from the field, including four of six from three-point range, en route to a career-high 25 points. He also grabbed seven boards and handed out six assists -- both game highs.
Chicago (4-4) led 35-34 after a first half that featured four lead changes and two ties. Illinois Wesleyan's Sean Johnson scored the Titans' first 13 points, including a three-pointer 5:24 into the contest that put Illinois Wesleyan (4-4) on top 13-11. Johnson was held to three points the rest of the contest.
Hainje scored 10 points, including a pair of three-point baskets, during an 18-0 Chicago run to start the second stanza. The Maroons led by as many as 26 points, 80-54 at the 3:46 mark, as they cruised to the victory -- their first over the Titans at the Ratner Center in three tries.
Chicago shot 56% from the field in the second half, while the Titans connected on just 38% of their attempts in the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore point guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg), junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein), and senior forward Tim Reynolds (North Canton, Ohio/ Hoover) also scored in double figures.
Pancratz matched his career high with 17 points, while Corning and Reynolds added 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Brett Chamernik chipped in 13 points for the Titans.
