Chicago Announces Sixth 2008-09 Newcomer

CHICAGO -- University of Chicago Head Men's Basketball Coach Mike McGrath announced today that Matt Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich./ Pioneer) has enrolled at the University and plans to play for the Maroons beginning in 2008-09.

Playing for Head Coach Rex Stanczak, the 6'3" Johnson averaged 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists per game for Pioneer High School this past season. He was also the team's top three-point shooter for the third time in as many years.

"Matt is a very talented and versatile basketball player. He is tremendously competitive and played in a great high school program," said McGrath, who is 152-80 in nine years at Chicago. "We are very excited about what Matt may accomplish during his career at Chicago."

The Ann Arbor News Player of the Year and a Detroit Free Press All-State second team selection, Johnson helped lead the Pioneers to a 20-0 regular season record and a #2 ranking in the final Associated Press poll.

Johnson joins Alex Doyle (Lutz, Fla./ Tampa Catholic), Tommy Sotos (Elk Grove Village, Ill./ Conant), Steve Stefanou (Cincinnati, Ohio/ St. Xavier), Michael Sustarsic (Liberty, Ind./ Union County), and Tom Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio./ St. Xavier) as members of the Chicago men's basketball class of 2012.

Chicago won its second straight University Athletic Association championship and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament in 2007-08. The Maroons, who notched an 18-8 overall record, made their fourth NCAA postseason appearance under McGrath.
