Chicago Defeats Lake Forest in Midway Classic
CHICAGO -- Junior forward Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) scored 19 points, and senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) added 15 as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated Lake Forest College 70-59 in the opening round of the Midway Classic Saturday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Chicago (1-0) never trailed in the contest, which was the season opener for both teams.
The Maroons built a 40-29 halftime advantage and took their largest lead of the night, 47-29, on a free throw from senior forward Tim Reynolds (North Canton, Ohio/ Hoover) early in the second stanza.
Lake Forest (0-1) closed to within six points when a Victor Campbell three-pointer cut the Chicago lead to 52-46 with 10:17 remaining.
Hainje helped close out the victory as he scored six points in the game's final 3:35.
Corning was perfect on seven free throw attempts to lead an 83.9% effort (26-31) by the Maroons on the evening. Chicago was 10-for-10 from the line during the game's final 6:32.
Laird Walker led all scorers with 22 points for the Foresters. Hoyt Rees chipped in 10 points.
