Maroons Defeat MSOE in Overtime
CHICAGO -- Junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) scored five of his team-high 21 points in overtime as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering 80-73 in non-conference play Saturday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Corning hit a pair of foul shots with nine seconds left in regulation to give Chicago (7-4) a 67-66 lead, but MSOE (7-5) sent the game into overtime when Scott Murphy connected on one of two free throw tries with four-tenths of a second showing on the clock.
Senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg), who finished with 19 points, scored the first points of the extra period on a pair of foul shots before Corning buried a three-pointer to put the Maroons on top 72-67.
MSOE trimmed the deficit to 72-70 on Jeremy Off's basket at the 3:01 mark, but Corning answered with a layup with 2:36 remaining to seal the victory.
The Raiders held the lead for the final 12:21 of the first half as they built a 33-29 edge at the break.
The second half featured nine lead changes and four ties. MSOE matched its largest lead of the second stanza, 51-47, at the 9:16 mark before Chicago launched a 14-4 run to build its widest margin of regulation, 61-55, with 4:57 left.
A Hainje three-pointer at the 1:46 mark gave Chicago a 65-61 lead, but MSOE's Andy Voigt sunk a pair of free throws with 1:05 to go and hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds left to put MSOE on top 66-65.
Voigt led all scorers with 26 points, while Murphy and Austin Meier added 12 points in a losing effort.
Sophomore Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg), who contributed four of the Maroons' 13 overtime points, dished out a career-high 10 assists.
