Maroons Fall to Northwestern in Exhibition Game
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Mike Capocci scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Northwestern University to an 84-76 victory over the University of Chicago men's basketball team in an exhibition game Wednesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
A three-pointer by sophomore John Bonelli (San Francisco, Calif./ St. Ignatius) at the 13:59 mark of the first half put the Maroons on top 14-12 before Northwestern went on a 16-1 run to take a 28-15 lead.
The Wildcats led 42-34 at the half and matched their largest lead of the second half, 70-52, on a Sterling Williams layup with 8:44 left in the contest. Williams finished with 16 points and eight boards.
A basket by senior Tim Reynolds (North Canton, Ohio/ Lake) pulled Chicago to within eight points, 72-64, at the 5:27 mark, but the Maroons could get no closer.
Senior Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) led all scorers with 21 points to go along with eight rebounds and a pair of assists.
Three other Maroons reached double figures: sophomore Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) with 18 points, junior Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) with 15, and Reynolds with 10.
Both teams shot 48% from the field, but the Wildcats held the edge in rebounding (37-33) and turnovers (7-15).
