Former Maroon Derek Reich
Named to D3hoops.com All-Decade Team

CHICAGO -- The all-time leading scorer and rebounder in University of Chicago men's basketball history, Derek Reich has been selected to the D3hoops.com All-Decade First Team.

D3hoops.com is celebrating 10 years of NCAA Division III basketball coverage this month by choosing five teams of five players each from the past 10 seasons to its All-Decade Teams.

The 2003 Jostens Trophy recipient as the Division III player of the year, Reich was a three-time All-American and the only four-time Most Valuable Player in University Athletic Association history.

From 1999-2003 Reich scored 2,254 points and grabbed 934 rebounds -- both school records. The 6'7" Reich currently stands as Chicago's third-most accurate (44.0%) and fifth-most prolific (151) three-point shooter.

According to the D3hoops.com staff, "Derek Reich broke the mold as a big man, because he was not only comfortable banging underneath for rebounds, but he could step outside and shoot the three. The combination made him incredibly difficult for a Division III player to guard. And in case that weren't enough, he shot 76 percent from the foul line."

Reich led the Maroons to a pair of UAA championships and NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the national quarterfinals in 2001. During his career, Chicago compiled a 77-28 overall record and a 50-8 UAA mark. The Maroons finished the 2000-01 regular season as the top-ranked team in the nation.

"Playing in one of the best Division III basketball conferences in the country, Derek Reich is consistently considered the best player in league history. He has the statistics and accolades to back up this statement," said Chicago Head Coach Mike McGrath.

"Derek accomplished everything on very successful teams. Most importantly Derek is a great young man from a great family. He continues to be a visible figure around the program and continues to represent the best that University of Chicago student-athletes have to offer.”

Following his career at Chicago, Reich played professionally for two seasons in the Norwegian Basketball League. He is currently attending John Marshall Law School in Chicago.
