Chicago Defeats #3 Rochester, Gains Share of UAA Lead
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) collected 22 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated the third-ranked University of Rochester 74-65 in University Athletic Association play Sunday at the Palestra.
The victory moved Chicago into a three-way tie for the top spot in the league standings alongside Rochester and Washington (Mo.) University.
The win also marked the Maroons' second decision over a top-five team on the road in the past 10 days. On Jan. 25, Chicago edged then second-ranked Brandeis University 79-77 in Boston.
Chicago took the lead for good, 23-19, with 6:01 left in the first half on a four-point play by senior forward Tim Reynolds (North Canton, Ohio/ Hoover). Reynolds, who was 4-for-4 from three-point range on the day, matched his career scoring high with 15 points.
The Maroons (12-6 overall, 5-2 UAA) built a 37-35 advantage at the half and outscored the Yellowjackets 9-3 during the first 3:16 of the second stanza to take their largest lead of the game to that point, 46-38.
Rochester (16-2, 5-2) cut the Chicago lead to 57-56 on a pair of free throws from Jeff Juron with 8:03 remaining. Sparked by six points from Hainje, the Maroons went on an 11-4 run to increase their advantage to 68-60 at the 2:02 mark. Chicago led by least six points the rest of the way.
Field goal shooting was nearly equal (Chicago 52%, Rochester 49%), but the Maroons connected on 21 of 25 attempts from the foul line, compared to 6-of-10 for the Yellowjackets.
Junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) and sophomore point guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) tallied 15 and 14 points, respectively, as Chicago starters accounted for 70 of its 74 points.
Robert Dominiak scored 19 points for Rochester, which lost at home for the first time in 14 games dating back to last season. Uche Ndubizu added 16 points.
