#3 Rochester Defeats Chicago in Final Seconds

CHICAGO -- Uche Ndubizu scored the winning basket with four seconds remaining in the contest as the third-ranked University of Rochester defeated the University of Chicago 64-63 in a clash of University Athletic Association men's basketball co-leaders Friday night at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) converted a three-point play with 12 seconds left in the game to give Chicago (12-7 overall, 5-3) a 63-62 edge.

Following a Rochester timeout, Jeff Juron fed Ndubizu for the go-ahead basket with 3.7 seconds showing on the clock. Chicago got off a 25-foot shot as time expired, but the ball fell short.

Rochester (17-2, 6-2) took an early 9-2 lead and was up 13-10 at the 14:51 mark of the first period.

A layup by junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) gave Chicago its largest lead of the game, 28-17, with 3:27 remaining in the period, but the Yellowjackets closed out the half with a 7-0 run to cut the Maroons' lead to 28-24 at the intermission.

The second half featured seven lead changes and five ties. Chicago took its biggest lead of the second stanza, 36-30, on junior forward Adam Machones's (Duluth, Minn./ Marshall) basket with 17:09 to play.

Rochester went in front for the first time in the second half when a free throw by Jon Onyiriuka gave the Yellowjackets a 55-54 edge at the 5:35 mark.

An Onyiriuka layup with 2:41 remaining put Rochester in the lead until Hainje's three-point play with 12 seconds to go. Onyiriuka, who scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds, fouled out on the play.

Ndubizu, Mike Chmielowiec, and Robert Dominiak each scored 14 points for Rochester, which moved into a tie with Washington (Mo.) University for the top spot in the UAA standings.

Corning led Chicago with 18 points, while Hainje and sophomore guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) added 17 and 13 points, respectively.

The loss snapped Chicago's seven-game winning streak and marked the Maroons' first home conference setback in eight games dating back to last season.
