Maroons Defeat Transylvania at DePauw Tournament
GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) and senior forward Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) combined for 50 points as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated Transylvania University 89-75 Saturday night in the opening round of the Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge at DePauw University.
Corning poured in a career-high 29 points, while Hainje added 21. Corning connected on 10 of 14 attempts from the field, including a 2-for-4 effort from three-point distance. Hainje was eight for 12 from the floor and three of five from behind the arc.
Chicago (2-1) took the lead for good with 10:14 left in the first half when sophomore forward John Kinsella's (Chicago, Ill./ University) three-pointer put the Maroons on top 20-17.
Chicago built a 46-32 lead at the break and maintained a double-digit advantage for the game's final 16:13.
Corning and Hainje led the Maroons with six rebounds each as Chicago notched a 25-15 edge on the glass.
Both teams shot well from the field. Chicago hit 32 of 50 attempts for a .640 percentage, while Transylvania (1-2) shot at a .569 clip (29-51).
Transylvania's Joey Verax led all scorers with 33 points.
Chicago will take on DePauw (3-0) in Sunday's tournament championship game at 4 p.m. (EST). The Tigers defeated Marian (Ind.) College 83-72 in Saturday's first contest.
