Chicago Rallies, Falls to #22 Wheaton
WHEATON, Ill. -- Despite mounting a fierce second-half rally, the University of Chicago men's basketball team dropped a 75-73 decision at 22nd-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) College.
Chicago (2-3) trailed 43-27 at the break and was down by 20 points, 49-29, early in the second stanza.
The Maroons chipped away at the lead and closed to within single digits when a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jake Pancratz (Schaumburg, Ill./ Schaumburg) cut the Wheaton advantage to 64-55 with 7:23 remaining.
Kent Raymond gave the Thunder (3-0) their last double-digit lead, 71-61, with a layup at the 4:01 mark.
Sophomore forward John Kinsella (Chicago, Ill./ University High) hit a pair of three-point baskets 26 seconds apart to pull Chicago to within four points, 73-69, with 2:54 to play.
Junior forward Adam Machones's (Duluth, Minn./ Marshall) layup cut the Wheaton lead to 73-71 at the 1:37 mark, but Jacob Carwell answered with a basket for the Thunder 20 seconds later.
Pancratz scored the final basket of the game with 57 seconds remaining. Chicago gained possession of the ball with 23 seconds to go following a Wheaton miss, but a last-second three-point attempt failed.
After shooting 40% in the first half, the Maroons shot 61% in the second period, including an 8-for-13 effort (61.5%) from three-point distance.
Junior guard Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) led the Maroons with 19 points, while Pancratz and Machones each added 17. Pancratz handed out nine assists. Kinsella chipped in 10 points.
Andy Wiele led all scorers with 31 points for Wheaton, while Raymond and Ben Panner each collected 17 points.
