Maroons Lead the Way at Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. -- Senior Ryan McCarl (Muskegon, Mich./ Mona Shores) placed second overall and led five Maroons among the top 11 finishers as the University of Chicago men's cross country team opened its 2007 season with a first-place showing at Friday's Elmhurst College Invitational.

McCarl clocked a time of 19:07.77 on the six-kilometer course, placing him just 2.62 seconds off the pace of the top finisher, Ben Grant of Loras College.

Juniors Jon Ascolese (Loveland, Ohio/ Loveland) and Chris Peverada (Hampden, Maine/ Hampden) placed fifth and eighth with respective times of 19:21.50 and 19:24.71.

Competing in their first collegiate event, freshmen Arthur Baptist (Arlington Heights, Ill./ Prospect) and Nick Nunez (Algonquin, Ill./ Dundee-Crown) finished 10th and 11th, respectively, with times of 19:29.78 and 19:37.13.

Chicago topped the 16-team field with 36 points. Loras was the runner-up with 65 points, followed by host Elmhurst with 68.
