Alex Clifford Named UAA Top Rookie
CHICAGO -- University of Chicago freshman forward Alex Clifford (Houston, Texas/ Phillips Academy Andover) has been named the University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year as the conference today announced its 2007 All-Association Team.
Clifford, who also garnered All-UAA First-Team recognition, led the Maroons in scoring this season with six goals and three assists for 15 points. He tallied four times in UAA play and ranked third in the conference with 0.57 goals per game in league competition.
Three Chicago players -- senior defender Jon Cartwright (Franklin, Tenn./ Battle Ground Academy), sophomore defender John Hughes (Winston-Salem, N.C./ Lawrenceville, N.J.), and freshman forward Ryan Fitzgerald (Beaverton, Ore./ Westview) -- joined Clifford on the All-UAA Team as honorable mention selections.
Cartwright and Hughes anchored a Chicago defensive unit that produced a pair of shutouts in league play, while Fitzgerald collected three goals and two assists for eight points on the season.
Chicago finished the 2007 season with a 6-9-2 overall record and placed sixth in the UAA with a 1-4-2 mark in conference play.
