Maroons, Tartans Play to 2-2 Draw
PITTSBURGH -- Carnegie Mellon University scored twice in the final 17 minutes of regulation to force a 2-2 tie with the University of Chicago men's soccer team in University Athletic Association play Saturday at Gesling Stadium.
Chicago (5-5-1 overall, 0-1-1 UAA) took a 2-0 halftime lead on unassisted goals from sophomore forward Edgar Friloux (Madison, Wis./ West) at 17:24 and freshman forward Alex Clifford (Houston, Texas/ Phillips Andover Academy) at 31:03.
Friloux's goal, his third of the season, came after he flicked the ball past CMU netminder Matthew Bazin. Clifford recorded his team-leading fifth goal of the year on a shot from 30 yards out.
Chicago kept Carnegie Mellon (6-1-1, 0-1-1) off the scoreboard until Ricky Griffin's one-touch found the back of the Maroons' net at the 72:03 mark. Griffin, who entered the match as the UAA's third-leading scorer, tallied for the eighth time this year.
The Tartans evened the score with just 2:47 remaining in regulation on Adam Bogus's header -- his first goal of the campaign.
Carnegie Mellon held a 16-10 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 edge in the second half. The teams combined for just three shots in the two overtime stanzas -- two for CMU and one for Chicago.
Bazin and Chicago freshman goalkeeper Steven Baron (Chalfont, Pa./ Penn Charter) each collected four saves.
