Maroons Edge Illinois Wesleyan 2-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Freshman forward Alex Clifford's (Houston, Texas/ Phillips Andover Academy) goal early in the second half proved to be the difference as the University of Chicago men's soccer team defeated host Illinois Wesleyan University 2-1 in non-conference play Tuesday night.

Clifford scored his second goal of the year, and first career game-winner, at the 53:07 mark to break a 1-1 deadlock. The goal was the Maroons' first second-half tally this season.

The teams scored 1:37 apart late in the first period. Senior forward Andrew Hamilton (Springfield, Ill./ Sacred Heart-Griffin) put the Maroons in front with his second goal of the year at the 38:37 mark.

Chris Sleezer then tallied for Illinois Wesleyan (1-5) at 40:14 to even the score at the half.

Chicago (4-3) held an 8-3 edge in shots in the first half, before being outshot 7-4 in the final 45 minutes.

Freshman netminder Steven Baron (Chalfont, Pa./ Penn Charter) collected six saves as he raised his season record to 3-1.

The Maroons won for the third time in their last four games and notched their second straight road victory.
