Maroons Fall in Season Opener
WHEATON, Ill. -- Loras University tallied a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 non-conference win over the University of Chicago men's soccer team in the season opener for both teams Friday at the Wheaton College Bob Baptista Invitational.
Nick Rizzo put Loras (1-0) on the board when he sent a deflected ball past Chicago junior netminder Micah Gruber (Rockville Centre, N.Y./ South Side) at the 28:34 mark.
Gruber collected six of his seven saves in the first half as Loras (1-0) outshot the Maroons (0-1) by a 12-2 margin in the game's first 45 minutes.
A.J. Josephs's header at 61:40 capped the scoring. Both of the Duhawks' goals were unassisted.
Loras held an 8-7 edge in shots in the second stanza, giving the Duhawks a 20-9 advantage on the day.
