Maroons Tie #20 Washington in Season Finale
CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago men's soccer team closed out its 2007 campaign with a scoreless tie against 20th-ranked Washington (Mo.) University in University Athletic Association play Saturday at Stagg Field.
Chicago (6-9-2 overall, 1-4-2 UAA) held a 13-11 edge in shots, including a 4-1 advantage in the two overtime periods.
Freshman forward Alex Clifford (Houston, Texas/ Phillips Andover Academy) provided the best scoring chances for either team in the second overtime period, but on two occasions his long shots were turned aside by Washington netminder John Smelcer.
Smelcer collected four saves on the day, while freshman Steven Baron (Chalfont, Pa./ Penn Charter) made two saves for the Maroons en route to his fourth shutout of the year.
Washington (13-4-2) finished the regular season in third place in the UAA. Chicago captured sixth place.
