Chicago Places 5th at UAA Championship
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The University of Chicago men's swimming & diving team captured fifth place at the 2008 University Athletic Association Championship held Wednesday through Saturday at the University of Rochester.
Junior Alex Stabell (Godfrey, Ill./ Alton) earned All-UAA honors in one individual event and one relay.
Stabell was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly with an NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying time of 51.14 seconds.
Stabell also swam the third leg of the Maroons' 400-yard medley relay team -- along with freshman Sebastien Davis-VanGelder (Falls Church, Va./ Marshall), freshman Ed Wagner (Sheboygan, Wis./ South), and freshman James Schlabach (Beverly Hills, Mich./ Groves) -- which finished second with a provisional-qualifying time of 3:28.25.
Senior Zach Ergish (Moreno Valley, Calif./ Valley View) also registered a provisional-qualifying time with a 2:08.28 performance -- good for fifth place -- in the 200-yard breaststroke. He also placed eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.25).
Four other Maroons placed among the top eight in their respective events.
Sophomore Brian Young (Douglassville, Pa./ St. Pius) captured fourth place in the 100-yard backstroke (53.07).
Senior Andrew Kent (Barcelona, Venezuela/ CIPLC) placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.62).
Seniors Hiro Hayashi (Tokyo, Japan/ St. Mary’s) and Jason Azares (Denville, N.J./ Morris Knolls) notched eighth-place showings in the 100-yard butterfly (53.13) and 200-yard butterfly (1:56.67), respectively..
Emory University totaled 1,704 points in successfully defending its team championship. Carnegie Mellon University and New York University finished in second (1,413) and third (1,315) place, respectively, while Washington (Mo.) University totaled 1,142 points to finish fourth. Chicago (999), Case Western Reserve University (677), Rochester (634), and Brandeis University (477) rounded out the standings.
