Maroons Defeat Wheaton in Season Debut

WHEATON, Ill. -- Seven different individuals posted first-place finishes as the University of Chicago men's swimming & diving team opened its 2007-08 campaign Saturday afternoon with a 125-77 win over Wheaton (Ill.) College.

Sophomore Brian Young (Douglassville, Pa./ St. Pius) took top honors in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.60) and was a member of the Maroons' winning 400-yard medley relay team (3:35.40) along with senior Andrew Kent (Barcelona, Venezuela/ CIPLC), junior Alex Stabell (Godfrey, Ill./ Alton), and freshman Ed Wagner (Sheboygan, Wis./ South).

Two other returning swimmers turned in winning performances as senior Jason Azares (Denville, N.J./ Morris Knolls) and junior Shane Carlson (Houston, Texas/ Memorial) won the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.96) and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:12.12), respectively.

Four freshmen won their respective events: Sebastien Davis-VanGelder (Falls Church, Va./ George C. Marshall) in the 50-yard freestyle (22.49 seconds), James Schlabach (Beverly Hills, Mich./ Groves) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.31), Jacob Hanebutt (Overland Park, Kan./ Blue Valley North) in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.89), and Dan Nichols (Vienna, Va./ Oakton) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.07).
