Maroons Defeat NYU in UAA Quarterfinals
ATLANTA -- The 21st-ranked University of Chicago men's tennis team defeated New York University 6-3 in the opening round of the 2008 University Athletic Association Championship Friday morning at Emory University.
The victory moves Chicago (13-6) into Saturday's semifinal round where it will face Washington (Mo.) University at 12:30 p.m. (EST). The second-ranked Bears (15-3) defeated the University of Rochester 9-0 in quarterfinal action.
Sophomores Garrett Brinker (Granger, Ind./ Penn) and Steve Saltarelli (Lake Bluff, Ill./ Lake Forest) won 8-4 at first doubles, and both were successful in singles play. Brinker notched a 7-6, 6-4 decision at fourth singles, while Saltarelli posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at the sixth slot.
Freshman Tim Walsh (Winter Springs, Fla./ Winter Springs) and sophomore Lado Bakhutashvili (Fox Point, Wis./ Nicolet) won in straight sets at second and third singles, respectively, and teamed up for an 8-3 victory at second doubles.
NYU fell to 8-9 on the season.
