Chicago Places Second at UAA Championship

CHICAGO -- Led by three conference champions, the University of Chicago men's outdoor track & field team captured second place at the 2008 University Athletic Association Championships Saturday and Sunday at the Ted Haydon Track.

Carnegie Mellon University edged the Maroons 198.5 to 180 for the team title. Emory University finished a close third with 164 points.

Freshmen Brian Andreycak (Pleasantville, N.Y./ Fordham Prep), Arthur Baptist (Arlington Heights, Ill./ Prospect), and Jacob Solus (Crestwood, Ill./ Oak Forest) took top honors in the 110-meter hurdles (15.18), 10,000-meter run (32:05.38), and triple jump (14.20 m), respectively. Solus's mark was good for an NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying distance.

Seniors John Anderson (Downers Grove, Ill./ North) and Zach Rodgers (Nashville, Tenn./ University) and sophomore Blake Obuchowski (Geneva, Ill./ Geneva) earned All-Association honors in multiple events.

Rodgers was the runner-up in the long jump (6.84 m) and triple jump (13.78 m). Anderson placed second in the hammer throw (47.90 m) and third in the discus (42.31 m). Obuchowski finished second in the 100-meter dash (10.96) and third in the 200 (22.18).

Three other Maroons turned in All-UAA performances. Freshman John Sabacinski (Charlotte, N.C./ Myers Park) was the runner-up in the discus (43.85 m). Junior Tom Nero (Carlisle, Ind./ Sullivan) and freshman Drew Jackson (Sugar Hill, Ga./ North Gwinnett) placed third in the shot put (13.51 m) and 110-meter hurdles (15.83), respectively.

The Maroons' 400-meter relay team of Obuchowski, junior Herman Reeves (Chicago, Ill./ St. Ignatius), sophomore Patrick Offner (Houston, Texas/ Awty International), and freshman Keith Newhouse (Palos Park, Ill./ Stagg) placed second with a time of 42.09 seconds.
