Chicago Sweeps Kalamazoo

CHICAGO -- Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) had six hits and four RBIs and earned a victory as the University of Chicago softball team swept a doubleheader against Kalamazoo College Thursday at Stagg Field.

Duffy went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs as the Maroons won the opener 15-0. She also allowed just one hit and struck out six in three innings of work en route to evening her season record at 3-3.

Senior first baseman Cassie Wierenga (Worth, Ill./ Shepard), junior shortstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant), freshman designated hitter Sara Whaley (Bakersfield, Calif./ Christian), and freshman left fielder Jennifer Simile (Glenshaw, Pa./ Shaler Area) also drove in a pair of runs.

Chicago (6-6) won the nightcap 8-0 behind four shutout innings from sophomore pitcher Lauren White (Oakland, Calif./ Bentley School). White (2-3) yielded only two hits while fanning six.

Freshman catcher Hannah Lighty (Mokena, Ill./ Lincoln-Way East) drove in three runs, while Duffy went 3-for-3 with two runs and a pair of RBIs, including her first home run of the season.

Chicago pounded out 29 hits in the two five-inning games and held Kalamazoo (1-9) to just three hits.

After starting the season 1-5, the Maroons have won five of their last six contests, including three in a row.
