Maroons Split with Lake Forest
CHICAGO -- Making their final home appearance of the 2008 campaign, the University of Chicago softball team split a doubleheader with Lake Forest College Tuesday at Stagg Field. After dropping the first game 10-6, the Maroons won the nightcap 7-5.
Junior shortstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) homered to lead off both halves of the twinbill as she extended her hitting streak to 21 games. She was 3-for-7 on the day.
Lake Forest scored five runs in the third inning and added five more in the sixth en route to a 10-6 win in the opening contest. Tracy Rainey drove in four runs for the Foresters, while Christy Condon knocked in three.
In addition to Jacobson's leadoff homer, freshman center fielder Caitlin Romano (Bealeton, Va./ Liberty) belted her first career home run, a two-run blast in the sixth inning.
Jeannette Andresen (6-2) went the distance for the win, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Sophomore pitcher Lauren White (Oakland, Calif./ Bentley) took the loss. White (3-7) allowed 10 runs (six earned) over 5.1 frames.
In game two, Chicago (10-16) trailed 5-4 after five and one-half innings, before scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman left fielder Lori Knapp (Chicago, Ill./ St. Ignatius) delivered the key hit, a two-run double with two outs that gave the Maroons a 6-5 lead. The Maroons plated their final run when Romano drew a bases-loaded walk.
Sophomore pitcher Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) went the distance to raise her record to 5-6. She allowed seven hits and four earned runs.
Kendra Grant (6-6) took the loss for the Foresters (15-11).
