Maroons Split at Lawrence
APPLETON, Wis. -- Playing its final scheduled games of the 2008 campaign, the University of Chicago softball team split a doubleheader at Lawrence University Sunday afternoon, winning game one 6-5 before dropping the second game 7-4.
Junior shortstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) went 1-for-2 in the first game and 1-for-4 in the nightcap to extend her hitting streak to 25 games.
Senior designated hitter Vanessa Pineros (Mukilteo, Wash./ Kamiak) and freshman left fielder Jennifer Simile (Glenshaw, Pa./ Lower Merion) each went 2-for-3 with a run scored as the Maroons won game one 6-5.
Sophomore pitcher Lauren White (Oakland, Calif./ Bentley School) allowed just three walks through the first five innings as she raised her record to 4-8. Sophomore Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) recorded the final three outs to notch the save.
The Maroons (11-19) led 4-1 after six innings in the second game, but Lawrence's (9-16) Carrie Van Groll sent the game into extra frames with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh before belting the game-winning three-run blast in the eighth.
Jacobson collected a pair of RBIs in game two, while senior first baseman Cassie Wierenga (Worth, Ill./ Shepard) scored twice.
