Maroons Drop Two to North Central
CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago softball team lost two games to North Central College Sunday at Stagg Field, falling 3-2 in extra innings in the opener before dropping an 8-2 decision in the nightcap.
Chicago trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning in game one. After the first two batters were retired, freshman pinch hitter Lori Knapp (Chicago, Ill./ St. Ignatius) and junior shortstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) singled. A North Central error then brought home the tying run.
Jacobson accounted for three of the Maroons' seven hits in the opening contest.
A run-scoring single by Kelli Loeffel with two outs in the top of the eighth plated the go-ahead run for North Central as the Maroons lost their first extra-inning affair of the year.
North Central's Jenna Prieto (11-2) and Chicago sophomore Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) each tossed complete games. Prieto allowed seven hits and four walks, while fanning three. Duffy (4-6) gave up six hits and a pair of walks to go along with three strikeouts.
The Cardinals (21-7) exploded for seven runs in the first two frames en route to the game two victory. Loeffel (7-5) pitched a complete game and collected a pair of RBIs.
Jacobson went 2-for-3 including her first home run of the season -- a two-run blast in the bottom of the third inning -- to extend her hitting streak to 19 games.
