Chicago Splits Twinbill with North Park

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago softball team split a doubleheader against North Park University Saturday at Stagg Field, dropping the first game 8-2 before rallying for a 13-5 win in the nightcap.

The Vikings scored four runs in the top of the fourth and added three more in the fifth in game one. Kara Emmering, Katie Batchelor, and Beth Seebacher each collected a pair of RBIs as North Park pounded out 10 hits.

Senior first baseman Cassie Wierenga (Worth, Ill./ Shepard) and freshman designated hitter Sara Whaley (Bakersfield, Calif./ Christian) each had run-scoring singles for the Maroons.

Mallory Bieritz (5-4) went the distance for the victory. She scattered five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Sophomore Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) was tagged for eight runs in four-plus innings as she slipped to 3-3 on the season.

The Maroons responded with a 14-hit onslaught in the second game, capped by a grand slam off the bat of sophomore second baseman Jillian Lenson (Newton, Mass./ South) with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. The home run was the first of Lenson's career.

Whaley and freshman center fielder Caitlin Romano (Bealeton, Va./ Liberty) each collected a pair of RBIs, while junior shortstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Sophomore Lauren White (Oakland, Calif./ Bentley School) tossed her third complete game of the season to even her season mark at 3-3.

Tatum Sexton (4-5) took the loss for the Vikings, who got home runs from Batchelor and Susan Domenick in a losing effort.

Both teams now stand at .500 on the season, Chicago at 7-7 and North Park at 9-9.
