Chicago Posts 4-6 Mark in Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The University of Chicago softball team finished 4-6 on its season-opening spring break tour at the Tucson Invitational.
Chicago 13, Taylor 5 (Mar. 27)
Sophomore pitcher Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) tossed a complete game and scored four runs as the Maroons ended the week with a victory. Freshman right fielder Jennifer Simile (Glenshaw, Pa./ Shaler Area) drove in four runs, and senior catcher Vanessa Pineros (Mukilteo, Wash./ Kamiak) knocked in three.
Gustavus Adolphus 5, Chicago 1 (Mar. 27)
The Gusties scored four times in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman catcher Sara Whaley (Bakersfield, Calif./ Christian) collected the Maroons' lone RBI. Duffy was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Chicago 8, McPherson 0 (Mar. 25)
Sophomore pitcher Lauren White (Oakland, Calif./ Bentley School) tossed a complete-game one-hitter. White, who was 3-for-3 at the plate, allowed just one walk while fanning seven.
Duffy drove in three runs, and senior third baseman Cassie Wierenga (Worth, Ill./ Shepard) belted a two-run homer.
Chicago 17, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 1 (Mar. 25)
Freshman catcher Hannah Lighty (Mokena, Ill./ Lincoln-Way East) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Duffy went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. The Maroons pounded out 15 hits as nine different players scored. Freshman pitcher Christy Corfias (Perry, Ohio/ Perry) notched her first career victory as she yielded just two hits over five frames.
Gustavus Adolphus 6, Chicago 5 (Mar. 24)
The Gusties exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held off a late Chicago rally. The Maroons plated three runs in the top of the seventh, but left the tying runner on third base. Three Chicago errors accounted for five unearned runs off Duffy, who went the distance while going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Luther 8, Chicago 0 (Mar. 24)
For the second time in three days, Luther blanked the Maroons. Junior shortstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) had two of Chicago's three hits.
Simon Fraser 19, Chicago 1 (Mar. 23)
Canadian collegiate powerhouse Simon Fraser scored eight times in the opening frame and added seven more in the second.
Chicago 13, Schreiner 2 (Mar. 23)
Pineros went 5-for-5 with five RBIs as the Maroons picked up their first win of the year. Duffy, who collected a pair of RBIs, held Schreiner scoreless for the final four innings. She fanned six over six innings of work. Freshman right fielder Jennifer Simile (Glenshaw, Pa./ Shaler Area) had three hits in four at-bats.
Luther 10, Chicago 0 (Mar. 22)
Luther tallied four times in the second and fourth innings and held the Maroons two a pair of base hits.
Schreiner 10, Chicago 1 (Mar. 22)
Jacobson collected a pair of hits as the Maroons fell in their season debut. White had the team's lone RBI.
